National Semiconductor Day™ (NSD), established by NIICA, recognizes the essential role semiconductors play in powering the technologies that drive America’s economy, security, and daily life. From advanced manufacturing and defense systems to consumer electronics and AI, semiconductors underpin every critical innovation shaping the future.

This annual observance brings together employers, educators, government partners, and workforce leaders to highlight the progress of the U.S. semiconductor ecosystem—and the urgent need to build a coordinated national workforce strategy that can sustain this growth.
Why National Semiconductor Day™ Matters
-
Semiconductors Power Every Critical System: They underpin America’s defense capabilities, manufacturing strength, transportation networks, energy systems, medical technologies, and the rapidly growing AI economy. Modern life — and national security — run on chips.
-
U.S. Competitiveness Depends on a Skilled Workforce: As the United States works to expand domestic semiconductor manufacturing, the strength of the workforce behind it has become just as important as the fabs themselves. A reliable, highly skilled pipeline of technicians, engineers, and operators is essential to sustaining growth and keeping pace with global demand.
Congressman Paul Tonko presented NIICA President & CEO Mike Russo with a proclamation recognizing National Semiconductor Day™ during last year’s celebration.
-
National Semiconductor Day™ Highlights the Workforce Imperative: This day underscores a simple truth that investment alone won’t secure the nation’s semiconductor future. The industry needs connected, scalable training pathways — including Registered Apprenticeships (RAs) and other skill-based models — that prepare workers for high-precision roles across fabs, supplier networks, and advanced manufacturing environments.

NIICA’s Role in Building the Semiconductor Workforce
NIICA leads the national workforce strategy for semiconductors, advanced manufacturing, and tech-based industries as the U.S. Department of Labor’s national RA Intermediary.

Through this work, NIICA:
-
Helps employers design and launch Registered Apprenticeships (RAs) tied to real industry skill needs.
-
Develops skill-based learning models that reduce time to proficiency and strengthen job readiness.
-
Supports national alignment through the National Talent Hub™, providing competency-based tools, training pathways, and job-alignment resources.
-
Expands the National Apprentice Network, giving workers validated, portable skills that support career mobility across the semiconductor supply chain.
National Semiconductor Day™ amplifies these efforts by spotlighting the partnerships, training models, and coordinated strategies required to build a resilient, future-ready talent pipeline.
