A success story from Eaton Crouse-Hinds LLC’s Registered Apprenticeship (RA) program

For M. Ralph Carter III, the apprenticeship program at Eaton Crouse-Hinds LLC in Syracuse, NY, provided a structured pathway to advance his technical skills and professional development. As a second-year Tool and Die Maker apprentice and Union Chief Steward for IBEW Local 2084 Power Professionals, Carter exemplifies the integration of hands-on learning with leadership responsibilities.
Carter's prior experience includes roles governed by collective bargaining agreements at a local nursing home and Upstate Medical. This background offered him insights into union operations and workplace dynamics, which he now applies in his leadership position.
In 2023, Eaton expanded its New York State Registered Apprenticeship program under MACNY sponsorship, with support from NIICA. Carter was among six employees selected for this initiative, which combines on-the-job training with technical instruction, aligning with industries critical to the semiconductor, nanotechnology, and green energy supply chains.
Overcoming challenges associated with dyslexia, Carter honed his visual and tactile learning abilities. His dedication led him to earn an associate degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology from Onondaga Community College, further solidifying his commitment to a skill-based career.
In his role as Union Chief Steward and Executive Board member, Carter assists colleagues in understanding contracts, proposals, and workplace policies. He emphasizes the importance of proactive engagement and support within the workforce.
Carter's journey underscores the value of RA programs in cultivating skilled professionals equipped to meet the demands of evolving industries.
